Step 1: Make sure your product meets the standards

Before you can supply electrical, electronic or radio products in New Zealand, you must make sure they meet the standards set out in the radiocommunications regulations.

The radiocommunications standards

The radiocommunications standards are described in 2 separate notices. Each notice explains:

• the different classes of products it covers
• the relevant standards that apply to those products
• the level of conformity that the products need to meet
• the type of products that are exempt from meeting the standard.

All products that are not exempt must conform to the requirements set out in the relevant standards.

Radiocommunications (EMC standards) Notice 2019

The EMC standards notice covers electrical and electronic products, and gives a conformity level for each class of product (1, 2 or 3). It also shows the appropriate frequency ranges for EMC products, and variations to existing standards.

Radiocommunications Regulations (Radio Standards) Notice 2016

The radio standards notice covers radio products, and also gives a conformity level for each class of product. The conformity levels for radio are broader than those for EMC products — they include level 1, A1, 2, A2, 3 and A3. All products, regardless of conformity level, must comply with the Unwanted Emissions Limits as shown in the notice.

• New Zealand standards
• joint NZ/Australian standards
• almost all standards published by overseas standards bodies.
